The most common sort of trunking is where you have stuff spread out
over a bunch of interfaces on a connection bases. The SGI product
called NLBS splits connections over multiple interfaces. Also in that
category is Cisco Fast Etherchannel, which you can do with the Phobos
NICs. Other vendors who have their own incarnation. The 802.3ad
standard unifies a lot of those other standards, but not a whole lot
of people do 802.3ad quite yet.
Having said that, I think the stuff that the Beowulf folks may have
been doing involves splitting packets. Ah, yes:

natürlich gibt es das wohl noch nicht auf sgi-hardware, da ih ja meinen Verkaufs-/Marketing-Ansprechpartner habe.
Kennt jemand die preise für eine (gebrauchte) gigabit-ethernetkarte für z.b. die octane?
